Keeping your teeth white following teeth whitening

Updated: Oct 11, 2018

So, you’ve done it, you have completed a course of either at home or in surgery teeth whitening. But how do you now keep your teeth looking bright.

Here at Bucklersbury Dental Studio we have 5 top tips to keep your teeth looking their best following teeth whitening.

1. Oral Hygiene Routine

Brush your teeth, for at least two minutes twice a day, using a fluoride toothpaste. This may sound obvious but studies have shown that the average person only brushes their teeth for 45 seconds. Try setting a timer or listening to your favourite song to help ensure you give your teeth the attention they deserve. You should also use interdental cleaning aids to clean between teeth where brushing misses.

2. Avoid Dark Foods and Drinks

Anything that has the ability to stain a tablecloth or a t-shirt also has the ability to stain your teeth. For example, red wine, berries, tea and dark sauces can all have a detrimental effect on your now pearly whites. One way to avoid staining is to eat lettuce, spinach or broccoli at the start of your meal, these vegetables form a protective film over teeth so that foods that stain cannot seep into your teeth’s pores

3. Quit Smoking

One of the effects of smoking is staining on teeth due to the nicotine and tar in the tobacco. Teeth can turn yellow in a very short time. The only way to stop this is to quit smoking. Your dentist will be able to provide you with details of smoking cessation help in the area.

4. Visit the Hygienist

The hygienist specialises in preventative oral health and will be able to remove any plaque and calculus deposits that may build up on your teeth. They will also be able to provide you with help on advice on the best oral hygiene routine to follow to ensure you teeth always look their best.

5. Top up Treatment

Over time your teeth naturally start to dull. The dentist will be able to provide you with additional whitening syringes to top up your teeth whitening treatment. Your dentist will be able to advise you on how regularly you will need to top up your whitening prior to treatment starting.
